The UEFA Europa League returns with four quarter-final second legs, and this is where the competition usually reveals its true character.
The first leg gave a real test to teams who will be looking forward to overturning them in the second leg..
Some teams arrive with advantage. Others arrive needing to chase. What matters now is not just quality, but how each side interprets the state of their tie.
1. Nottingham Forest vs Porto is set up for a high-risk, high-reward battle
This is the most open tie heading into the second leg. A 1–1 draw in Portugal means there is no real advantage, no away goals cushion, just a straight fight over 90 minutes, or more.
Nottingham Forest will feel this is their moment. At home, they tend to play with more intensity, especially in transitions and playing in front of their fans. In the first leg, they showed they can survive difficult phases, but they also created enough to believe this tie is there to be taken.
FC Porto, on the other hand, have experience in managing nights like this. They were composed in the first leg, structured without the ball, and selective in attack. But they did not kill the game when they had control. That is the danger now.
What to expect is a shift in tempo depending on who scores first. If Forest scores early, the game opens up and suits them. If Porto take the lead, they will slow everything down and force Forest into mistakes.
2. Aston Villa carry momentum, but Bologna is still alive in the tie

Aston Villa did the difficult part in Italy, winning 2:1 away and taking control of the tie. But a one-goal lead is never comfortable at this stage.
In the first leg, Villa were more efficient. They did not dominate possession, but they were sharper in key moments, especially in transitions. That is where they hurt Bologna FC.
Bologna’s issue was not getting into good areas, it was what they did once they got there. Their build-up was solid, but the final actions lacked precision. That leaves them in a difficult position now. They have to attack, but without losing structure.
At home, Villa will likely try to start fast, not necessarily to score immediately, but to push Bologna back and control territory early. If Villa scores first, the tie could stretch quickly.
But if Bologna scores, the entire dynamic flips. Villa would then be forced into a more open game, and that is where Bologna’s movement in the final third could become more dangerous.
3. Real Betis vs Braga could be decided by who controls emotion better
This tie is finely balanced, but the feeling after the first leg is that Real Betis let control slip at a key moment.
They had phases where they dictated the game in Portugal, especially with the ball. Their structure allowed them to progress well and create situations in the final third. But they did not convert that control into a decisive advantage.
SC Braga stayed in the game and took their chances when it came. That is what keeps them alive now.
The second leg in Spain will test Betis differently. They will be expected to control the game again, but with that comes pressure to convert chances. Braga will not mind defending for long spells and waiting for transitions.
What often decides these ties is emotional control. If Betis become impatient, they open spaces. If they stay structured, they should create enough to win.
4. Celta Vigo vs Freiburg may come down to one moment
This is the tightest tie on paper and probably the most tactical. The first leg was cautious, with both teams more focused on avoiding mistakes than taking risks.
SC Freiburg were disciplined defensively, compact in shape, and difficult to break down. Celta Vigo had more of the ball, but struggled to create clear chances.
That pattern may not change much in the second leg. Games like this are rarely decided by open play dominance. They are decided by details, a set-piece, a defensive lapse, or one moment of quality in transition.
Celta, at home, will have more responsibility to push forward. Freiburg will be comfortable absorbing pressure and waiting.
This is the kind of tie where the first goal could decide everything, because neither side is built to chase recklessly.
