Barnsley Football Club manager Conor Hourihane has dismissed the news circulating in the Nigerian sports media about the sacking of Nigerian midfielder Kelechi Nwankali by the club five games into the new season.
News broke two days ago that the former Flying Eagles midfielder was dismissed and his contract was terminated for arriving late to the club’s preseason training camp.
However, Conor Hourihane, while addressing the media following the club’s 1-0 win over Peterborough, said he is not aware of the development.
Fired? Not heard anything about that,” the Barnsley boss told BBC Radio Sheffield in reaction to speculation surrounding the future of Kelechi Nwankali.
Kelechi Nwakali has not been involved for Barnsley this season, with five matches played already, as the club is actively listening to offers for the former youth international.
Hourihane confirmed that the player is still contracted to the club, but he’s likely to make a move before the end of the transfer window.
Yes, exactly. That would be the plan, for all the parties, that would be the best scenario. But in terms of ‘fired’, that’s completely wide of the mark – first time I’ve heard of it.”
Kelechi Nwankali joined Barnsley last season from Portuguese side Chaves and played 24 times.
