5 Things to Know About Nigeria vs Iran Friendly

Tosin by Tosin

The Super Eagles will face the Iran national football team in an international friendly that has drawn attention ahead of the global football calendar. The Nigeria vs Iran match offers both teams an opportunity to sharpen their squads and test tactical options in a neutral environment.

Below are five key things to know about the encounter.

1. The Nigeria vs Iran Match Will Be Played in Turkey

The friendly will take place in Antalya, a city widely used for international training camps and friendly tournaments.

The match is also scheduled for Friday, 27th of March, 2026, and will be played by 2PM Nigerian time.

Turkey’s modern facilities and neutral location make it a convenient meeting point for teams from different regions. Playing in Antalya allows both sides to prepare in a controlled setting away from the pressure of competitive fixtures.

2. It Is Part of a Four-Nation Friendly Tournament

Nigeria vs Iran  forms part of a four-nation invitational event. Alongside the Super Eagles and Iran, the tournament also features Jordan national football team and Costa Rica national football team.

The format allows teams to play more than one international match during the FIFA window. Nigeria is expected to face Jordan in the tournament after the Iran fixture as part of its preparation schedule.

3. Both Teams Have Met Before at the World Cup

Nigeria and Iran do not meet frequently in international football. Their most notable encounter came at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. That match ended in a goalless draw, with both teams struggling to break down each other’s defensive lines.

The upcoming friendly therefore presents another opportunity for the two nations to renew their on-field rivalry more than a decade after that World Cup meeting.

4. Injury Blow for Both Teams

Both teams will be without key defenders for the friendly. Nigeria will miss Calvin Bassey, who has been ruled out with a back injury. The defender, known for his versatility in defence, will not be available for selection as reported by the NFF.

Iran will also be without experienced defender Saeed Ezatolahi, who has also been ruled out of the match. The absence of the two defenders could force both teams to make adjustments at the back.

5. An Important Preparation Game for Both Sides

Although it is a friendly fixture, the match holds importance for both teams as they prepare for future international competitions. Games like this provide an opportunity to build rhythm, test combinations, and maintain competitive sharpness.

For Nigeria, facing a disciplined Asian opponent offers a different tactical challenge from the teams they often meet in African competitions. The Super Eagles will be hoping the encounter provides useful lessons as they continue preparations for upcoming international assignments.
