Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have booked their place in the final of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship after defeating hosts Côte d’Ivoire 4-3 on penalties following an entertaining 2-2 draw after extra time.
The semi-final clash lived up to expectations, with the hosts dominating much of the opening half. Côte d’Ivoire, who had conceded just one goal throughout the tournament before the encounter, controlled possession and created several chances before taking a deserved lead in the 17th minute.
Despite their superiority, the Ivorians failed to extend their advantage, allowing Nigeria to grow into the contest after the break.
The Flying Eagles found their equaliser in the 68th minute through captain Habila Simeon, who rose highest to head home a long throw from Oraro Lucky, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance. The goal shifted the momentum in Nigeria’s favour as Abdul Maikaba’s men finished regulation time strongly.
With the score tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the match went into extra time.
Nigeria completed the comeback early in the additional period when Oraro Lucky’s dangerous long throw again caused problems in the Ivorian defence. Aliyu Abubakar met the delivery with a powerful header to give the Flying Eagles a 2-1 lead.
However, the hosts responded once more, scoring in the 105th minute to make it 2-2 and force a penalty shootout.
Goalkeeper Clinton Lawani proved to be the difference in the shootout, making two crucial saves as Nigeria emerged 4-3 winners on penalties to secure a place in the final.
The victory also guarantees Nigeria a place at the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, with both WAFU B finalists earning the region’s qualification spots for the continental tournament.
Abdul Maikaba’s side will now shift their focus to the final, where they will look to claim the WAFU B U-20 Championship title and build momentum ahead of next year’s U-20 AFCON.
