Haaland powers Norway past Cote d’Ivoire to secure last 16 spot

Erling Haaland struck four minutes from time to send Norway through to the World Cup round of 16 with a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Tuesday.

Norway broke the deadlock in the first half when RB Leipzig winger Antonio Nusa curled a brilliant strike past goalkeeper Yahia Fofana in the 39th minute. Ivory Coast, appearing in their first-ever World Cup knockout match, hit back through Manchester United winger Amad Diallo, who levelled the score with a fine solo goal in the 74th minute.

With the tie level and tension rising, Manchester City forward Haaland settled it in the 86th minute, converting from close range after a pass from Patrick Berg. It was his fifth goal of the tournament, leaving him just one behind Golden Boot leader Lionel Messi.

The win extended a remarkable personal streak for Haaland, who has now scored in every one of Norway’s competitive matches dating back to October 2024 — 25 goals in 13 games.

Norway, who lost 4-1 to France in their group finale after resting several first-choice players including Haaland and captain Martin Ødegaard, advance to face Brazil at MetLife Stadium in the round of 16. The Norwegians have never lost to the five-time champions in four previous meetings, including a 2-1 win over Brazil at the 1998 World Cup in France.

Ivory Coast, who switched international allegiances paid off for striker Ange-Yoan Bonny but ultimately fell short, exit the tournament after a historic run to their first knockout appearance.
