‘He’s not better than Maguire’ — Paul Scholes questions new Manchester United signing

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has expressed his disappointment with the club’s summer recruitment, particularly the signing of Matthijs de Ligt. His comments came after United’s dismal 3-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Scholes questioned the logic behind De Ligt’s arrival, suggesting he hasn’t improved the team significantly. “When you bring players in, you expect them to be much better than who you already have. I don’t see players coming in who are a big difference,” Scholes told SuperSport.

Specifically targeting De Ligt’s signing, Scholes drew parallels with Harry Maguire, who has started just two Premier League games this season. “De Ligt has come in for Maguire, let’s say, but there’s no big difference there.”

Scholes was blunt When asked if De Ligt represented an upgrade on Maguire for Manchester United, “No, absolutely not.”

United’s defeat to Spurs highlighted their defensive vulnerabilities, exacerbated by Bruno Fernandes’s red card for a reckless foul on James Maddison. Goals from Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski, and Dominic Solanke sealed the win for Tottenham.
