Nigerian football superstar Victor Osimhen, one of Africa’s most expensive players, recently gave an honest and heartfelt glimpse into his humble beginnings in Lagos through a video shared on X.
Growing up near the Olusosun landfill, Osimhen faced significant hardship after losing his mother at a young age and his father’s job loss months later.
To support his family of six siblings, young Victor took on various odd jobs, including selling water sachets to motorists stuck in traffic, running errands, cutting grass, and briefly working in a computer shop.
“There is a building in front of my house, you know this face me, I face you house, I used to fetch water for people there for ₦80,” the Super Eagles star stated.
“Most of the time I would wash gutters, with the green things that are coming out for ₦30 – I washed it,” Osimhen added, recounting how he earned small amounts by cleaning gutters filled with Spirogyra algae. Despite these challenges, football became Osimhen’s refuge and passion, where he sharpened his skills playing on the streets.
Osimhen’s remarkable journey from washing gutters for ₦30 to becoming one of Africa’s most celebrated footballers is a powerful testament to his resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering ambition.
