John Fashanu is a name that lights up both football and entertainment. From his days as a fierce striker for Wimbledon’s “Crazy Gang” to his vibrant presence as a TV host, Fashanu’s journey is one of grit, talent, and reinvention.
Born on September 18, 1962, in Kensington, London, to a Nigerian father and Guyanese mother, John’s life blends hard work and charisma. He’s built a legacy across sports and media that continues to inspire. Let’s dive into his story, from his early years to his lasting impact.

Early Life and Family

John Fashanu’s childhood had its challenges. After his parents—Patrick, a Nigerian barrister, and Pearl, a Guyanese nurse—separated, John and his older brother Justin were placed in a Barnardo’s care home. At six, they were fostered by Alf and Betty Jackson in Shropham, Norfolk, where John found stability and discovered his love for sports.
Fashanu excelled in boxing as a youth and holds a black belt in karate, but football became his true passion. At Attleborough High School, his athletic talent shone, setting the stage for an incredible career.

John Fashanu: Football Career

Fashanu’s football career kicked off in 1979 with Norwich City, where he turned professional in 1981. He played sparingly, scoring once, but gained experience on loan at Crystal Palace and New Zealand’s Miramar Rangers, reaching the Chatham Cup final. In 1983, he joined Lincoln City, scoring seven goals in 26 games, before moving to Millwall in 1984 for £55,000. There, he helped secure promotion to the Second Division and reached the FA Cup quarter-finals, netting 12 goals in two seasons.

His big break came in 1986 when he signed with Wimbledon for a club-record £125,000. As a cornerstone of the “Crazy Gang,” known for their tough, physical style, John helped pull off one of football’s greatest upsets: the 1988 FA Cup win over Liverpool. He also scored in that year’s Charity Shield, despite a 2-1 loss.
Over eight years at Wimbledon, he scored 126 goals, peaking in 1990-91 with 20 goals, tying for third in the First Division. His aggressive style, like a controversial 1993 clash with Tottenham’s Gary Mabbutt, made him a feared striker.
He earned two England caps in 1989 against Chile and Scotland but later expressed his regret for choosing England over Nigeria. His career ended in 1995 at Aston Villa after a knee injury from a Ryan Giggs tackle forced his retirement. In 17 years, he scored 134 league goals.

Life After Football

After retiring, John Fashanu transitioned smoothly into television. In the 1990s, he co-hosted the UK’s Gladiators, winning fans with his energy and “Awooga!” catchphrase. He finished second on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in 2003 and appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2006.
He managed Fash FC, his Sunday league team, for a 2003-04 Bravo reality show and later hosted Deal or No Deal Nigeria on M-Net Africa. In 2023, at 60, he competed on Dancing on Ice, showing his competitive spirit. John also supports youth and sports charities and remains active in media and public speaking.

Personal Life and Net Worth

John’s personal life has seen ups and downs. He’s been married three times: first at 18 to a Spanish woman, with whom he has a daughter, Amal; then to Melissa Kassa-Mapsi until 2004; and since 2011, to Abigail, with whom he has two sons, Amir and Akio, and another daughter, Alana.

John Fashanu’s net worth is not publicly available. While his career as a footballer and television personality is well-known, his net worth has not been disclosed. However, based on his earnings from football, TV roles, and business ventures like real estate, it’s estimated to be around $3-4 million.
Controversies, like a 1997 match-fixing allegation (he was cleared) and an arrest in Nigeria over a land dispute (which he denies), haven’t dimmed his shine.

Legacy and Achievements

John Fashanu’s legacy is one of breaking barriers and seizing opportunities. His 1988 FA Cup win, two England caps, and over 100 Wimbledon goals cement his football icon status. His TV career, from Gladiators to Dancing on Ice, highlights his versatility.
Despite challenges, like his strained relationship with his late brother Justin, John’s charisma endures. As a member of the Wimbledon Old Players’ Association, he stays connected to his roots, inspiring fans with his story of grit and glory.

John Fashanu: Social Media

John Fashanu stays connected with fans through social media, particularly on platforms like Instagram and X, where he shares updates on his life, business ventures, and charity work. His posts often highlight his love for football, throwbacks to his Gladiators days, and motivational messages.
On X, fans praise his charisma, with some calling him a “legend of the game” for his Wimbledon heroics. While not as active as younger stars, his social media presence keeps his vibrant personality alive.
