Kano Pillars remain winless win three matches as they got a point off Sporting Lagos on Saturday evening at the Sani Abacha Stadium in matchday 7 of the Nigeria Premier Football League.
The hosts spent most of the first half hammering at the door, and Sporting Lagos slipped in through the window. Valentine Ugwu’s goal in added time put the visitors ahead at the Sani Abacha Stadium on Saturday evening, against the run of play.
The goal came from a brilliant interchange in midfield that split the Pillars defence. When the move ended in a rebound inside the box, Ugwu pounced.
Kano had earned better. They started with a clear intention to score first and control the game, and veteran midfielder Rabiu Alli forced Clinton Lawani into a save from a free-kick in the 17th minute. Three minutes later, the goalkeeper protected his area again as the home side kept piling on the pressure.
The Tech Boys’ lead survived only four minutes after the break. Abdullahi Musa restored parity and put Pillars back on level terms.
The second half then became a test of nerve. Aliyu Baba had the chance to hand Sporting Lagos the lead again, but he could not convert from a tight spot. At the other end, Alli lined up another free-kick and tried to beat Lawani once more, only for the goalkeeper to save it calmly and keep his side in the game.
Lawani was the standout in a fairly contested affair, and his string of saves is the reason Sporting Lagos left Kano with a point. The 1-1 draw means both sides have now recorded three consecutive draws in the league.
NPFL action continues tomorrow across various match venues. Reigning champions Enugu Rangers meet Abia Warriors in the Oriental Derby, Rivers United host Ikorodu City, and Enyimba take on Plateau United at the Aba Stadium. The Aba Elephant will look to get their second win of the season after the emphatic victory over Shooting Stars in midweek.
