Nigerian football legend, Nwankwo Kanu took to social media this weekend to relive one of the most cherished moments of his illustrious career, his UEFA Champions League triumph with Ajax in 1995.
The former Super Eagles captain posted a nostalgic tribute, celebrating the 30th anniversary of Ajax’s historic victory over AC Milan.
“KAN U believe it? The journey of football is incredible and lasts a lifetime. Throwback memories of champions league winning feeling,” Kanu wrote on X (formerly Twitter), alongside a throwback photo of him holding the trophy.

The 1995 final, held at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna, saw a young Ajax side defeat defending champions AC Milan 1-0, with a late goal from Patrick Kluivert. At just 18 years old, Kanu played a vital role in the campaign, coming off the bench in the final and helping secure the Dutch club’s fourth European crown.
Fans flooded the comments with praise and fond memories, hailing the moment as a turning point in Kanu’s career and a proud moment for African football.
That Champions League victory was a springboard for Kanu, who would go on to enjoy a glittering career with clubs like Inter Milan, Arsenal, and Portsmouth, as well as win Olympic gold with Nigeria in 1996.
Known for his elegance on the ball and remarkable composure, Kanu remains one of Africa’s most celebrated football icons.
