Lionel Messi scores as Inter Miami knockout out of MLS Cup Playoffs

In the first round of the playoffs, Inter Miami’s record-breaking MLS season came to an abrupt end against Atlanta United.

The Herons, who set a new MLS record at the end of the regular season with 74 points, lost the last two games of the series against Atlanta.

With MVP front-runner Lionel Messi leading the way, the 2024 Supporters’ Shield were the clear favorites to win the MLS Cup but were in for a surprise.

Atlanta wanted to play more directly on the counter, but the Herons pressed for the first goal in the first ten minutes.

Messi was picked out by Diego Gómez at the top of the Atlanta penalty area, but veteran Brad Guzan again stopped his shot with Matías Rojas to convert.

However, a quick brace from Thiaré gave Atlanta the lead a few moments later going to halftime with the advantage.

In the second half, Messi equalized the score for Miami with his first playoff goal, heading home a close-range attempt over six-foot three-inch Stian Gregersen.

However, Atlanta would react once more as full-back Pedro Amador connected with Bartosz Slisz to earn his fourth assist of the postseason.

Miami had a fantastic season and added additional trophies, but the season’s abrupt conclusion left a lot to be desired.

Supporters will be hoping that the Herons can make some much-needed defensive improvements as they try to start over in the offseason and return in 2025.
