England staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Italy 2–1 after extra time in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 semi-final in Geneva tonight.
England fell behind in the 33rd minute when Italy’s Barbara Bonansea struck a powerful volley into the top corner following a slick one-two off the right flank.
The Lionesses struggled to find a cutting edge through much of the first half, Italy’s organized back‑five frustrating England’s rhythm.
Throughout the second half, England gradually grew into the game as Lauren Hemp and Beth Mead tested goalkeeper Laura Giuliani, who produced key saves, while Italy rode their luck countering.
Italy’s captain Cristiana Girelli, instrumental in their quarter-final surge, was forced off in the 64th minute after a leg injury causing a major blow for the Azzurre.
Just when it looked as though Italy was set to reach their first Euros final in 28 years, 19‑year‑old substitute Michelle Agyemang popped up in the sixth minute of stoppage time to pounce on a goalkeeping spill and drive home the equaliser – a dramatic lifeline that sent the clash into extra time.
In extra time, Agyemang nearly struck again, her deft lob rattling the crossbar. The decisive moment came late in the 119th minute when Emma Severini fouled Mead in the box.
Chloe Kelly stepped up and, after her initial penalty was saved, was first to react and score on the rebound, clinching a breathtaking 2–1 victory.
England now advance to the June 27 final in Basel, where they will face the winner of Spain vs Germany.
