Liverpool 2-2 Man Utd: 3 things learnt as Amorim denies Slot

Ruben Amorim guided his Manchester United side to an impressive 2-2 draw against Liverpool, thanks to Amad Diallo’s late heroics to earn a point.

Here are 3 things learnt from the game.

Uguarte and Mainoo must be first choice in midfield for Amorim

Ruben Amorim’s team selection against Newcastle had raised eyebrows, with the inclusion of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen in midfield. However, against Liverpool, Amorim opted for a different approach, and it paid off.

By selecting a more energetic and dynamic midfield duo in Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte, United were able to deny Liverpool the space and freedom they had enjoyed against Newcastle.

Mainoo, in particular, was impressive, showcasing his ability to find pockets of space and interchange passes with Ugarte.

Manchester United need a new striker

Rasmus Hojlund got a golden opportunity just before halftime, as he found space behind Trent Alexander-Arnold and was clean through on goal.

However, the 21-year-old striker lacked the composure to beat Liverpool’s Alisson, instead firing the ball straight at the keeper.

Missed chances like these can be costly, and if United are to challenge at the top, they need a striker with the necessary killer instinct.

Gakpo’s stock continues to rise

While Mohamed Salah has been grabbing headlines for his goals and assists this season, Liverpool have several talented players, who deserve praise too.

Cody Gakpo scored a brilliant goal to extend his red-hot streak, sitting Mathijs De Ligt on his backside before finishing past Andre Onana.

The 25-year-old now has four goals in his last five Premier League matches, and his goal-threat and all-round play has made him a starter in Arne Slot’s side.
