Luka Modrić joins AC Milan on free transfer

AC Milan have officially completed the signing of legendary Croatian midfielder, Luka Modrić on a free transfer, bringing an illustrious chapter at Real Madrid to a close and marking the start of a new adventure in Serie A.

The 38-year-old joins the Rossoneri on a one-year deal with the option to extend for an additional season. He will wear the number 14 shirt and is expected to join the squad in August after completing post-season engagements.

Modrić leaves Real Madrid after a trophy-laden 12-year spell, during which he won six Champions League titles, four La Liga titles, and the Ballon d’Or in 2018.

With nearly 600 appearances for the Spanish giants, his experience and leadership are seen as vital to Milan’s rebuild under returning manager Massimiliano Allegri.

The Croatian international is expected to play a key role in guiding Milan’s young squad after a disappointing eighth-place finish in Serie A last season.

Modrić described the move as a “new challenge” and expressed his excitement at joining one of Europe’s most historic clubs.

His arrival is part of a broader effort by Milan to restore their competitive edge, with Allegri aiming to return the club to European football. If successful, Modrić’s deal could be extended into the 2026 season, possibly setting up a swansong at the next World Cup.
