Harvey Barnes put the host ahead after 18 minutes with a brilliant strike courtesy of Sandro Tonali’s assist.
The lead lasted until the 39th minute as Savinho restored parity for the visitors with a low drive into the back of the net.
Omar Marmoush put City ahead two minutes after the restart as got to the end of Matheus Nunes’ pass before powering the ball into the roof of the net.
Matheus Nunes provided the assist for Marmoush’s brace five minutes after the hour mark to put Manchester City 3-1 up.
Manchester City left Tyneside with a comfortable win as they await the opponent in the last eight.
Meanwhile, Chelsea had to wait till extra time to get a result over the English Championship side away from home .
Wrexham put up a spirited performance as they went ahead twice in the match before Josh Acheampong’ s equaliser dragged the match into extra time.
Alejandro Garnacho and João Pedro scored in each half of the extra time to give Chelsea a a 4-2 win over Wrexham.
