The Red Devils initially took control with two goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot after a brilliant team effort led by Bruno Fernandes.
However, Lyon staged a dramatic comeback, scoring two goals in the second half and completing the turnaround with a penalty in extra time, after going a man down as Corentin Tolisso was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Despite the shocking turn of events, Amorim’s men refused to give up, with Bruno Fernandes scoring from the spot and Kobbie Mainoo equalizing.
Harry Maguire then headed in the winner in the 120th minute, keeping United’s Europa League hopes alive.
