The 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) served up two tense Group B encounters on Saturday, August 9, as Mauritania edged the Central African Republic and co-hosts Tanzania triumphed over Madagascar.
At the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Mauritania got off to a dream start in the day’s early fixture. Ahmed El Moctar struck in the 9th minute, calmly slotting home what would prove to be the game’s only goal.
Despite a spirited push from the Central African Republic, Mauritania’s disciplined back line and well-drilled midfield kept their opponents at bay, sealing a crucial 1–0 victory that keeps their qualification hopes alive.

The evening clash saw the home crowd in full voice as Tanzania faced Madagascar. The Taifa Stars, buoyed by their strong start to the tournament, delivered another spirited performance to earn a 2–1 win.
Clinical finishing and resolute defending proved decisive as Tanzania tightened their grip on top spot in the group, moving within touching distance of a quarter-final berth.
With these results, the group remains delicately poised as Mauritania are firmly in the chase for knockout qualification, while the Central African Republic face an uphill battle. Madagascar, still searching for their first win, now face a must-win scenario in their final group outing.
