Messi Becomes Leagues Cup Record Goalscorer As Inter Miami Beat Atletico San Luis

Lionel Messi scored twice to become the all-time leading goalscorer in Leagues Cup history as Inter Miami opened their 2026 campaign with an entertaining 4-2 victory over Atletico San Luis on Wednesday.

The Argentine superstar took his tally in the competition to 14 goals, surpassing every previous scorer in the tournament involving Major League Soccer (MLS) and Liga MX clubs. Messi had previously inspired Inter Miami to the inaugural Leagues Cup title in 2023 shortly after joining the club.

The visitors made a dream start when David Rodriguez fired Atletico San Luis ahead in the fourth minute. However, Messi restored parity just seven minutes later, calmly finishing to bring Miami back into the contest.

Inter Miami completed the turnaround in the 26th minute through Venezuelan midfielder Telasco Segovia, who gave the hosts a 2-1 advantage.

Messi struck again moments before the break to extend Miami’s lead before Brazilian defender Micael added a fourth deep into first-half stoppage time, capping a dominant opening 45 minutes for the MLS side.

Atletico San Luis managed to pull one back in the second half through Rafa Llorente, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation as Inter Miami comfortably secured all three points in their opening group fixture.
