Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is gearing up for his fifth Super Bowl appearance, but this time, he’ll have a special guest in attendance.
Argentine football legend Lionel Messi, who plays for MLS side Inter Miami, is reportedly set to attend Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans on February 8.
Messi’s growing interest in the NFL has been well-documented, and attending the biggest U.S. sporting event of the year marks his latest step towards NFL fandom.
In a 2024 interview on the Big Time Podcast, Messi confessed, “I’m learning a lot about American football, getting to know it better, and loving it.”
Upon hearing of Messi’s planned attendance, Mahomes expressed his excitement, saying,
“He’s the GOAT of his profession, and to have someone like that at the game, it will be awesome because I’ll get to showcase who I am and what talent I have.”
Mahomes also revealed his admiration for Messi, recalling a time when he watched the Argentine soccer star play in Kansas City.
“I got to watch him when he played in Kansas City, I think it was last year or maybe a couple of years ago, and he had a couple of goals in that game [and] you see the greatness that he displays every single day.”
Mahomes concluded, “So, [he’s] someone else that I can look up to and try to get up on his level someday.”
