Messi reflects on rivalry with Ronaldo: “A beautiful time for football”

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo defined a generation of football, etching their names into history through sustained excellence at the highest level.

Their iconic rivalry not only elevated their individual legacies but also intensified the storied clashes between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Widely regarded as two of the greatest footballers of all time, both Messi and Ronaldo constructed careers laden with trophies, records, and defining moments that captivated the sporting world.

In a recent interview with the Official Ballon d’Or X account, Messi reflected on the years he spent competing directly with the Portuguese superstar for football’s ultimate honors.

“It was always a battle,” Messi said. “In sporting terms, it was very beautiful. We pushed each other to be better because we are both extremely competitive. He always wanted to win everything, and so did I. It was a beautiful time for us and for people who love football.”

“He [Cristiano] always wanted to win everything and beat everyone,” Messi continued. “I think it was a really beautiful time for us and for people who love football. What we achieved over such a long period has great merit because, as they say, it’s easy to reach the top, but the hard part is staying there.”

The foundation of their rivalry was laid in 2008 when Ronaldo claimed his first Ballon d’Or while at Manchester United, narrowly edging a young and emerging Messi.

However, the competition reached new heights in 2009 when Ronaldo transferred to Real Madrid, placing the two in direct opposition in La Liga.

From 2009 to 2018, the football world witnessed their frequent showdowns in El Clásico — the globe’s most-watched club football fixture.

Over the course of 15 years, the two legends shared 13 Ballon d’Or awards. Messi secured four consecutively from 2009 to 2012, while Ronaldo countered with four wins in five years between 2013 and 2017.

Their enduring dominance and mutual drive for excellence created an era that will be remembered as one of the most thrilling in football history.
