Nigeria 5-0 Zambia: 3 things learnt as Super Falcons zoom into WAFCON semis

The Super Falcons transformed from a sluggish group-stage outfit into a dynamic, ruthless force in their 5-0 demolition of Zambia’s Copper Queens at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Here are three things we learnt from this emphatic victory
1. Madugu delivered high-level coaching

Head coach Justin Madugu’s bold selection choices ignited Nigeria’s attack. Moving away from a lackluster front three, he injected pace and creativity with Esther Okoronkwo, Chinwendu Ihezuo, and Folashade Ijamilusi.
The trio’s impact was immediate—each found the net, overwhelming Zambia’s defense with their energy and cohesion. This tactical shift unleashed the Super Falcons’ attacking potential, proving that fresh legs and sharp decision-making can turn a functional side into a formidable one. Madugu must stick with this dynamic approach to sustain Nigeria’s momentum.
2. Esther Okoronkwo Emerges as a Game-Changer
Esther Okoronkwo stole the show in her first WAFCON start, scoring a goal and providing two assists while consistently outwitting Zambia’s backline.
Her intelligent movement, precise set-piece delivery, and relentless energy made her the heartbeat of Nigeria’s attack. Okoronkwo’s standout performance—contributing to four goal involvements in the tournament so far—marks her as the Super Falcons’ most valuable player. Her late inclusion in the starting lineup raises questions about earlier selections but confirms her as indispensable moving forward.
3. Time to Transition from a Legend?
Asisat Oshoala, a titan of African football, may be nearing the end of her storied career. Entering the match as a late substitute, she struggled to influence the game, appearing disconnected from the high-tempo attack.
While her vision remains sharp, her physicality seems to lag, hinting that the 30-year-old striker’s dominance may be waning. Nigeria’s new attacking stars shone brightly without her, suggesting a potential changing of the guard. Oshoala’s legacy is secure, but the Super Falcons may need to look to the future.
