Nigeria v Benin: Super Eagles permutations for World Cup Qualification

Matthew by Matthew

The Super Eagles of Nigeria still has a chance to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup next summer even though they occupy the third spot in Group C of the CAF qualifiers.

South Africa’s failure to bag maximum points against the Brave Warriors of Zimbabwe booted the hope of Nigeria snatching snatching the World Cup ticket.

However, the Super Eagles do not have their destinies on their hands, they lost it when they failed to win against Zimbabwe in Uyo in September.

Following FIFA’s point deduction off South Africa, the race to qualify for the World Cup in Group C now lies in teams doing each other favours voluntarily or otherwise on the last day.

Benin Republic are in pole position to qualify as they lead the Group having amassed 17 points while South Africa and Nigeria are second and third respectively with 15 and 14 points respectively.

Despite winning against Lesotho in Polokwane on Friday, the Super Eagles need a win against Benin Republic in Uyo and hope South Africa drop points again when they host Rwanda in Mbombela.

3. SOUTH AFRICA WILL QUALIFY FOR THE WORLD CUP SHOULD THEY DEFEAT RWANDA AND BENIN LOSE TO NIGERIA.

4. NIGERIA WILL QUALIFY SHOULD THEY DEFEAT BENIN AND SOUTH AFRICA FAIL TO WIN AGAINST RWANDA.

THIS MEANS IF NIGERIA BEAT BENIN REPUBLIC 1-0, THEY WILL EQUAL THE CHEETARS ON GOAL DIFFERENCE AND QUALIFY ON HEAD-TO-HEAD RULE.
