Leeds United announced their Premier League return in dramatic fashion with a hard-fought 1–0 win over Everton at Elland Road on Monday night.
A late Lukas Nmecha penalty settled a tense encounter, ensuring Daniel Farke’s side began life back in the top flight on a high.
The Whites carried the greater attacking threat throughout, their energy and pressing unsettling Everton, who struggled to create meaningful chances. New signings Anton Stach and Gabriel Gudmundsson impressed in midfield, while debutant forward Nmecha looked lively from the outset.
The decisive moment came in the 83rd minute when Stach’s thunderous shot struck James Tarkowski’s arm inside the area. After a lengthy VAR check, the referee awarded a penalty, much to the fury of the visitors.

Nmecha kept his composure from the spot, sending Jordan Pickford the wrong way to ignite rapturous celebrations among the home supporters.

For Everton, it was a frustrating evening. Despite the introduction of marquee signing Jack Grealish midway through the second half, David Moyes’ men rarely threatened and left Yorkshire empty-handed. Their lack of cutting edge in the final third will be a concern going forward.
Farke hailed his team’s resilience after the match, while Moyes lamented the penalty decision, suggesting it unfairly tilted the balance. Still, the result leaves Leeds with early momentum as they climb to seventh in the table, while Everton face early pressure to respond.
Elland Road erupted at the final whistle, the win symbolising not just three points, but a statement of intent from Leeds on their long-awaited Premier League return.
