Nasarawa Amazons moved to the summit of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Super Six playoffs table after a dramatic 2-1 victory over defending champions Bayelsa Queens in their Matchday Two clash in Port Harcourt on Monday.
The highly anticipated encounter lived up to expectations, with both sides creating several chances in an entertaining first half. However, neither team could find the breakthrough before the interval.
Bayelsa Queens eventually opened the scoring six minutes after the restart when Chiamaka Ezekwugo calmly finished to put the champions ahead.
Christopher Danjuma’s side refused to give up and mounted a spirited comeback in the closing stages of the game. Farikikyen Moses restored parity in the 80th minute before Ayatsea Hembafan struck deep into stoppage time to complete a stunning turnaround and hand Nasarawa Amazons all three points.
The victory takes Nasarawa Amazons to six points from their opening two matches, placing them at the top of the Super Six standings.
Abia Angels Shock Rivers Angels
Elsewhere, debutants Abia Angels continued their impressive campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over former champions Rivers Angels.
Winner David scored the decisive goal in the 26th minute, giving Abia Angels a lead they successfully defended until the final whistle.
A disciplined defensive display, coupled with a series of outstanding saves from their goalkeeper, helped the newcomers withstand relentless pressure from Rivers Angels and secure a famous win.
The result sees Abia Angels climb to second place on the table.
Edo Queens Cruise Past FC Robo Queens
Former champions Edo Queens recorded the biggest victory of the day, thrashing FC Robo Queens 4-1 in a dominant performance.
Chioma Moses starred for the Benin City side with a first-half brace that gave Edo Queens full control of the contest. Precious Oscar added a third shortly before the hour mark, while Mary Mamudu made it 4-0 in the 63rd minute.
FC Robo Queens managed a late consolation through Florence Godwin Freda four minutes from time, but it did little to alter the outcome as Edo Queens cruised to a comfortable victory.
With the Super Six playoffs gathering momentum, Nasarawa Amazons have taken an early advantage in the title race, while Abia Angels and Edo Queens continue to keep pace with impressive Matchday Two performances.
