English Championship side Southampton have identified a potential replacement for Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu, who is set to leave the club this summer after agreeing a deal with Turkish Super League outfit Trabzonspor.
Onuachu is on the verge of making a return to Trabzonspor, where he scored 17 goals in 25 matches in the 2023/2024 campaign while on loan from Southampton.
Sky Sports Germany reports that Southampton are in negotiations to sign United States striker Damion Downs from Cologne and have submitted a €8 million bid for the 20-year-old striker.
Damion Downs had quite an impressive outing last season as he helped Cologne secure promotion into the German Bundesliga with 10 goals and five assists in 29 matches.

The 20-year-old striker shares a similar profile with Onuachu, given his height, 6ft 4in, aerial threats, and hold-up play.
Downs is currently playing for the United States football team at the ongoing Gold Cup on home soil and has featured twice as a substitute.
Onuachu struggled with injuries and goals at Southampton, managing just four in 40 all-competition appearances, but the Super Eagles striker will be hoping Southampton and Trabzonspor reach an agreement soon, having agreed personal terms with the Turkish club.
