In December 2024, Nigerian forward, Ademola Lookman was honored with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Player of the Year award, succeeding compatriot Victor Osimhen, who had won the accolade in 2023.
Lookman’s stellar performances for Atalanta, notably his hat-trick in the Europa League final, played a pivotal role in his recognition.
Additionally, his contributions were instrumental in leading Nigeria to the Africa Cup of Nations final in 2023.
Addressing Lookman’s achievement, Osimhen dispelled any notions of rivalry, expressing genuine pride in his teammate’s success.
He remarked, “First of all, it was never my crown, it was just my turn to wear it. To be able to come back again, that a Nigerian won it, is a big achievement for the country, for Lookman, for his family.”
Osimhen further highlighted the depth of talent within Nigerian football, suggesting that the nation’s players are strong contenders for future CAF accolades.
Both Osimhen and Lookman are set to feature prominently in Nigeria’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers, underscoring their integral roles in the national team’s ambitions.
