Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen is on the verge of setting a new Champions League record ahead of Galatasaray’s home fixture against Liverpool.
If Osimhen scores against the Reds, he will become the highest-scoring Nigerian player in the history of the competition.
The former African Footballer of the Year is currently tied on goals, nine, with former Inter Milan striker Obafemi Martins.
One more goal will see Victor Osimhen set a jew record and become the first Nigerian player to reach double figures in the history of the competition.
Only seven Nigerian forwards have more than three goals in the UEFA Champions League: Victor Ikpeba (7), Nwankwo Kanu (5), Yakubu Aiyegbeni (5), Ademola Lookman (5), and Samuel Chukwueze (4).
While Martins netted nine times in 34 Champions League appearances, Osimhen needed just 17 games, hitting nine goals in his first 16 matches.
He struck twice during his spell at Lille and added seven goals while at Napoli.
Victor Osimhen scored against seven different opponents in the competition — Sporting Braga, Barcelona, Chelsea, Valencia, Ajax, Eintracht Frankfurt, and AC Milan.
Meanwhile, Osimhen might start the tie from the bench, having recently returned from injury. The Super Eagles striker has only played five minutes since his return to action.
However, Galatasaray will rely on the experience of Osimhen in the competition as they look to inflict another defeat on Liverpool just like Crystal Palace did over the weekend.
