Pro Ref has apologised to Manchester United after acknowledging that a VAR error allowed Erling Haaland’s winning goal to stand in Sunday’s Manchester derby at Old Trafford.
Manchester City defeated United 1-0, with Haaland scoring in the 60th minute after the initial offside decision against the striker was overturned following a lengthy VAR review.
The decision has now been admitted to be an error of judgement by Pro Ref, which said the VAR should have recommended an on-field review because of the potential impact of Enzo Fernández’s position in the build-up.
The incident began when Josko Gvardiol’s cross from the left was deflected into the area. Fernández attempted to reach the ball but failed to make contact, before Haaland finished at the far post.
The assistant referee initially flagged Haaland for offside, but VAR determined that Patrick Dorgu’s position had kept the Manchester City striker onside.
However, Pro Ref said the VAR failed to properly consider Fernández’s position and its possible impact on the play.
“In the same attack, it was established that Enzo Fernandez did not play the ball and therefore that makes any offside offence subjective,” Pro Ref said in a statement.
“However, on this occasion, the VAR did not recognise the likely impact of his position and should have recommended an on-field review.”
Pro Ref confirmed that it had contacted Manchester United to acknowledge the error and apologise.
“Contact has been made with Manchester United this evening to acknowledge what we deem is an error of judgement. A review of the incident will take place. Pro Ref acknowledge and make a statement of apology,” the organisation added.
The admission comes after United were unable to capitalise on playing against 10-man City for more than an hour following Phil Foden’s dismissal in the 23rd minute.
Haaland’s goal ultimately proved decisive, giving City all three points and maintaining their perfect start to the Premier League season.
For United, however, the VAR admission adds another layer of frustration to a derby defeat in which they had a significant numerical advantage for much of the game.
