Real Madrid edge Getafe to intensify La Liga chase as Bilbao maintains grip on Champions League spot

Real Madrid have shifted focus on beating Barcelona to the La Liga after crashing out of the Champions League.

Los Blancos defeated Athletic Bilbao lawt weekend and Getafe on Wednesday evening by the same scoreline to keep their chase alive.

Carlo Ancelotti made a couple of changes in the starting eleven with Brahim Diaz and Arda Guler on both sides of the flanks.

Arda Guler scored the only goal of the match as Real Madrid continued their winning streak against the home team.

The win put Real Madrid just four points behind Barcelona who lead the table with 76 points with five matches left.

Athletic Bilbao maintains grip on Champions League spot

The Basque team are determined to secure automatic qualification for next seaosn’s Champions League.

Bilbao took a step towards achieving the dream with 1-0 home win over Las Palmas courtesy of Inaki Williams’ first half goal.

Ernesto Valverde’s men are fourth place with 60 points after 33 matches.

Meanwhile Villarreal also on contention for a Champions League ticket next season failed to close the gap on Bilbao as the Yellow Submarines lost scandalously to Celta Vigo.

Alaves stuns Sociedad to move further away from drop zone

Nahuel Tenaglia’s 65th minute goal secured maximum points for Alaves over Real Sociedad as they continue to fight to beat the drop.

Alaves’ win over the visitors put them in 16th place with 34 points- three points behind Sevilla who occupy the 15th spot.

However, Alaves could drop to 17th if Girona wins against away at Leganes on Thursday.
