Real Sociedad eye Copa del Rey shock: 3 reasons they can stun Real Madrid

As the second leg of the Copa del RRey semi-finals between Real Sociedad and Real Madrid approaches, all eyes are on the Spanish giants to progress.

However, Real Sociedad has a history of causing upsets in this competition, and they possess the quality to do so again.

Here are three key reasons why the Basque side could stun Los Blancos.

1. Consistent Performances and Tactical Discipline

Real Sociedad have been one of the most consistent teams in La Liga this season. Their well-organized defensive unit, combined with a creative midfield, makes them a formidable opponent.

Under Imanol Alguacil, they have shown tactical flexibility, switching between compact defensive setups and high-pressing attacks.

With in-form stars like Takefusa Kubo and Oyarzabal leading the charge, Sociedad have the firepower to trouble Madrid’s defense.

2. Real Madrid’s Growing Injury List

Carlo Ancelotti’s squad has been plagued by injuries, with key players such as Thibaut Courtois, Éder Militão, and Dani Ceballos all sidelined.

Their absence has forced Madrid to rotate heavily, leading to occasional defensive vulnerabilities. With a demanding fixture schedule, fatigue could also play a role, potentially giving Sociedad an edge in intensity and sharpness.

3. History of Cup Surprises and Giant-Killing Potential

Real Sociedad are no strangers to upsetting Spanish football’s powerhouses. Their historic 2020 Copa del Rey triumph showcased their ability to rise to the occasion in knockout competitions.

They have also previously eliminated Real Madrid from this tournament, notably in 2020 with a thrilling 4-3 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu. This psychological advantage could fuel their belief heading into this crucial fixture.

In the first leg of the semifinal on February 26, 2025, Real Madrid secured a 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad at the Reale Arena.

The decisive goal came in the 19th minute from 18-year-old Brazilian forward Endrick, who capitalized on a precise long pass from Jude Bellingham to score.

The second leg of the semifinal is scheduled for Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at 8:30 PM at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. Real Madrid will aim to defend their narrow lead, while Real Sociedad will strive to overturn the deficit to reach the final.
