Reecue mission failed! Lookman’s Atalanta out as Onyedika’s Club Brugge qualify for Champions League second round

Ademola Lookman’s attempt to rescue Atalanta from crashing out of the UEFA Champions League failed on Tuesday night.

Instead Raphael Onyedika’s Club Brugge progressed instead as they recorded victories in both legs.

The Super Eagles forward marked his return from inury with a goal and a missed penalty on the night as Atalanta fell to a home defeat to the visitors.

La Dea put themselves in a difficult position in the first half as they Club Brugge raced to a 3-0 lead at the Gewiss Stadium.

Belgian young forward Chemsdine Talbi scored twice within 30 minutes to give Club Brugge a 2-0 lead.

Ferran Jutgler scored from a sublime shot from the edge of the box in added time of the first half to put Atalanta into further misery.

The introduction of Ademola Lookman in the second half almost turned the destiny of Atalanta around.

Lookman scored 46 seconds after his introduction as he tapped Davide Zappacosta’s squared ball into the net.

The Super Eagles forward scored again moments later but the video assistant referee ruled his goal for offside.

Moments later, the reigning African Footballer of the Year failed to beat Simon Mignolet from the penalty spot.

Onyedika deep in Club Brugge’s helped his side in defense as they held on to their lead.

Club Brugge left Bergamo with a 3-1 win and 5-2 aggregate scoreline as they progressed to the second round of the competition.
