Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca is reportedly pushing the club to challenge Manchester United for Aston Villa’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, according to Argentine reports.
The Blues made unsuccessful attempts to sign AC Milan’s Mike Maignan before the Club World Cup, with the French captain’s club confirming he won’t leave this summer.
Despite Maresca’s backing of current first-choice goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who joined from Arsenal for £17m in 2020, Martinez is a prime target.
The 32-year-old World Cup winner, visibly emotional after Villa’s final home game last season, could be available due to the club’s financial constraints.
Argentine journalist Christian Martin reported on DSports, “Chelsea wants Emiliano Martínez as their starting GK, and Enzo Maresca has asked.
“Willy Caballero, who is part of the technical team, has also given the go-ahead. The player wants to stay in England, so for now it’s an option for Chelsea.”
