Roland Idowu: 5 things to know about the Super Eagles-eligible midfielder

Roland Idowu is an attacking midfielder for Scottish Premier League side St. Mirren.

The young midfielder is enjoying an impressive debut season with The Saints after he arrived at the club on loan from Shrewsbury.

He wears the number 12 Jersey for the club and is an integral member of Steven Robinson’s squad.

5 things to know about Roland Idowu

1. Roland Idowu wasn’t born in Nigeria

Although he has a Nigerian surname, the midfielder wasn’t born in the country. Roland was born to a Nigerian father in Dublin, Ireland, in 2002. He spent his formative years in the capital before moving abroad at a young age to pursue his football career.

2. How old is Roland Idowu?

The midfielder is 23 years old as of April 2025. He was born on 21 January 2002. Idowu is quite tall as he stands at 6 feet and 0 inches tall.

3. How did Roland Idowu start football?

He started playing at a tender age just like the average footballer.

He started his career in the youth team of St Joseph’s Boys. Also, he played for Southampton’s and Cardiff City’s youth teams between 2018 and 2021.

Roland Idowu started his professional career at Bohemians in 2021 before joining Waterford a year later.

He spent three seasons at the club and went on to join Shrewsbury in the English League. He signed for Shrewsbury in 2023 but he’s currently on loan at St. Mirren in the Scottish Premier League.

4. What position does Roland Idowu play?

Roland Idowu is an attacking midfielder but can also play as a wide forward from the right.

He can play as a right midfielder and also can play just behind the striker.

He’s quick on the ball and operates basically in and around the half-spaces in the final third.

5. National team experience

Roland Idowu played for the Under-16 and Under-17 teams of the Republic of Ireland.

Furthermore, he represented the country at the 2019 UEFA Under-17 Championship hosted by Ireland.

Who’s Roland Idowu’s friend?

Roland Idowu is friends with Manchester City’s 23-year-old defender Timi Sobowale. They played for Ireland at the Under-17 championship in 2019.
