Arsenal’s Premier League title aspirations took a hit as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Gunners initially took the lead through 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri, who scored in the 16th minute.
Nwaneri’s goal came after he received a precise pass from Mikel Merino, allowing him to cut inside from the right and slot the ball under Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. This early advantage showcased Arsenal’s intent, but they struggled to capitalize further.
Brighton responded in the second half, equalizing in the 61st minute. The turning point was a penalty awarded after Arsenal defender William Saliba inadvertently fouled João Pedro while attempting a headed clearance. Pedro converted the spot-kick, leveling the score and shifting the momentum in favor of the Seagulls.
Despite Arsenal’s efforts to regain the lead, including opportunities for Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard, they were unable to break through Brighton’s resilient defense.
The draw extends Arsenal’s unbeaten run to 10 matches but leaves them five points behind league leaders Liverpool, who have two games in hand.
For Brighton, the draw marks a positive step as they aim to climb the league standings, ending a run of eight matches without a win.
