South Africa qualify for World Cup after 16-YEAR absence

South Africa have officially booked their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a confident 3–0 victory over Rwanda on Tuesday in Mbombela.

The result confirmed Bafana Bafana as winners of their qualifying group and secured their first World Cup appearance since hosting the tournament in 2010.

Thalente Mbatha set the tone early with a well-taken goal inside five minutes, calming any nerves among the home supporters.

Oswin Appollis doubled the advantage midway through the first half after a slick move that cut open the Rwandan defence.

Evidence Makgopa then made it 3–0 in the second half with a firm header from a corner, capping off a dominant display.

Despite a setback earlier in the campaign — when FIFA deducted three points for fielding an ineligible player — South Africa regrouped impressively and topped Group C ahead of Nigeria.

The Super Eagles had thrashed Benin 4–0 elsewhere but were left needing to navigate the playoff route after South Africa’s win rendered their result irrelevant.

The qualification marks South Africa’s first appearance at a World Cup on competitive merit since 2002. Players and fans celebrated at full-time, with national pride evident in the stands and on the pitch.

The team will now turn their focus to preparations for the 2026 finals across the United States, Canada and Mexico, with the tournament draw scheduled for later this year.
