Super Eagles survive late Lesotho sting to keep World Cup dream alive

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are still in contention to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing a narrow win over Lesotho.

Eric Chelle’s men survived a late drama in added time to grab maximum points against the “host” in Polokwane.

William Troost-Ekong penalty and Akor Adams debut goal gave Eric Chelle’s men maximum points to stay in contention of qualifying for the World Cup.

After a disappointing first half display, Troost-Ekong scored from the penalty spot 10 minutes into the second half.

Substitute, Akor Adams scored on his debut for the Super Eagles off an assist from Victor Osimhen to double the lead.

A goalkeeping error from Stanley Nwabali gifted Lesotho a life line after the Chippa United goalkeeper failed to clear the ball from a corner kick.

Nwabali almost gifted the Crocodiles a late equalizer from almost the same situation in added time of regulation time.

The match ended 2-1 as the Super Eagles remain third on the log with 14 points heading into the final match of the qualifiers against Benin Republic.

An outright win against the Cheetars and a draw or defeat for South Africa against Rwanda will see the Super Eagles miraculously qualify for the World Cup next summer.
