The Super Falcons of Nigeria secured a narrow win over defending champions South Africa to secure a place in the final of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Michelle Alozie’s late goal gave the nine-time champions a 2-1 win over South Africa in a tense semi-final tie at the Larbi Zouli Stadium on Tuesday evening.
It was a game of two halves as Nigeria dominated the first while South Africa got back into the tie in the second half.
Alozie’s 94th minute goal made the difference on the night as the Super Falcons continue their “Mission X” charge.
It wasn’t a smooth overall performance from Justin Madugu’s side as they are a few positives and shortcomings to take note off.
Below are three observations noticed from the tie.
1. The Super Falcons were quite wasteful
Rasheedat Ajibade’s goal before halftime from the penalty spot gave the Super Falcons the lead but they had chances to score at least two goals before the penalty kick. Esther Okoronkwo failed to convert her chance which could have put the Super Falcons a goal up before Ajibade’s penalty kick. It appears that Justin Madugu’s side are more clinical from set pieces tham open play chances.
2. Technically Gifted Players
The Super Falcons are blessed with technically- gifted players as seen in the quarter-final win over Zambia. Michelle Alozie’s technique with the long ball gave the team the win over Banyana Banyana. Esther Okoronkwo, Ashleigh Plumptre, Jennifer Echegini among others have shown brilliant display of technicality so far in this tournament.
3. Managing Pressure
Justin Madugu’s side news to show better composure when under pressure. After giving away a needles penalty which brought South Africa back into the game, they lost their rhythm and composure as they almost conceded again if not a goalline clearance. The senior players in the team: Ajibade, Ohale, Ucheibe and Ayinde must help the team stick together under tense situations.
