Super Falcons praised for their grit and discipline in Portugal draw

The Super Falcons played out a goalless draw against Portugal in an international friendly on Monday evening in Lisbon, earning praise for their strong defensive showing and team cohesion.

In what was the first of two warm-up matches ahead of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Nigeria impressed with a disciplined performance despite missing a few clear chances to win the game.

Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was widely applauded for a commanding display between the posts, pulling off several key saves to keep the Portuguese side at bay.

At the other end, Toni Payne and Francisca Ordega had golden opportunities to break the deadlock but couldn’t convert, with Ordega’s late effort rattling the post. Substitute Ifeoma Onumonu also added energy to Nigeria’s attack in the closing stages but Portugal held firm.

The result sparked mixed reactions from fans and analysts, with many commending the Falcons’ structure and fighting spirit, while others expressed concern about the lack of clinical finishing.

Still, the overall sentiment was positive, especially given the match was played away from home and featured a number of returning players including Ashleigh Plumptre and Halimat Ayinde.
