New England manager Thomas Tuchel has made it clear that his goal is to win the 2026 World Cup with England after signing an 18-month contract to replace Gareth Southgate.
The ex-Chelsea boss is a polarising choice, with many believing that the England manager should be English. Still, there’s no doubting his track record after winning trophies with Borussia Dortmund, PSG, and most notably, the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea.
Speaking at his unveiling, Tuchel revealed that his goal is to end England’s 60-year trophy drought.
“The federation is there, the women did it, the under-21s did it, so there is no reason [we can’t].”
The 51-year-old also emphasised the need to break free from England’s historical baggage.
“At some point, we have to free ourselves from history, we have to focus on the process and this will start in January.”
“I was unsure about taking this job at first, but I’m thrilled to work with this very special and exciting group of players.”
Tuchel replaces Gareth Southgate, who resigned after eight years at the helm following England’s Euro 2024 final loss to Spain in July.
