Nigeria’s Super Falcons claimed a thrilling 2–1 victory over South Africa in the WAFCON semifinal in Casablanca on Tuesday, setting up a showdown in the final against tournament hosts Morocco.
The match opened with a half‑time penalty from Rasheedat Ajibade, calmly converted after a handball in the box to give Nigeria the lead. South Africa, however, hit back in the 60th minute when Linda Motlhalo struck from the spot following a foul on Hildah Magaia, and it seemed destined for extra time.
Just four minutes into stoppage time, Michelle Alozie produced a moment of genius: her long‑range free kick bypassed everyone and looped into the corner of the net, sealing a dramatic 2–1 win and sending Nigeria through.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu lauded the team via a statement on his official X account, calling their performance “nothing short of superlative” and praising the display of “grit, talent, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit.”
He urged them to “keep soaring” as they prepare to pursue a record-extending 10th WAFCON title, assuring them of unwavering national support.
He added, “Well deserved! You have made the nation proud. Don’t stop until you bring the trophy home. Nigerians worldwide are rooting for you. We are waiting to receive the cup.”
The Falcons now aim to win their 10th WAFCON title on Sunday as they face tournament hosts, Morocco.
