Top 5 Super Eagles players in the English Premier League

Super Eagles players, over the years have made reasonable impact for their respective club sides since the start of the new version of the English Premier League in 1992.

Yabuku Aiyegbeni at Blackburn Rovers and Everton, John Obi Mikel at Chelsea, Kanu Nwankwo’s contributions at Arsenal, Jay Jay Okocha”s heroics at Bolton Wanderers between 2002 and 2006 among others, are well documented in the league’s archives.

These Super Eagles greats practically paved the way for the new generation of Eagles currently playing playing in the world most followed and watched league.

Alex Iwobi, Ola Aina, Calvin Bassey among others have enjoyed a decent run of consistency recently in the league and they form integral part of their teams.

This post briefly highlights the top five Super Eagles players in the English Premier League.

1. Alex Iwobi

Alex Iwobi’s wonder goal against Liverpool at Craven Cottage

The Fulham midfielder has one of his best performances last season. Iwobi, the Arsenal Academy graduate is known for his sleek passes and movements at the North London club. The Super Eagles midfielder has now added high work rate and positional dynamism since profile from his days at Everton and now Fulham. Alex Iwobi played 35 Premier League matches last season with nine goals and six assists.

2. Ola Aina

The former Chelsea defender narrowly missed out of 2024/2025 Premier League’s Team of the Season after an outstanding run of consistency in the league. Aina locked down the right hand side of Nottingham Forest’s defense as he played the 35 league matches last season. Aina s performance last season earned him a contract extension at the club during the summer.

 

3. Calvin Bassey

Calvin Bassey celebrates his goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford

The 25-year-old former Glasgow Rangers defender put has put his struggles at Ajax behind and he’s now Marco Silva’s first choice center back pairings at Fulham. Calvin Bassey’s excellent performance earned him Fulham’s 2024/2025 Player of the Year. Bassey is strong on the ball, has aerial dominance and positional awareness which makes him one the best defenders in the league.

 

4. Frank Onyeka

Frank Onyeka

His performance for the Super Eagles at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations showed Brentford’s former manager, Thomas Frank what the Onyeka is capable of doing. A box-to-box midfielder with tireless runs and ball-winning abilities. Onyeka had a decent loan spell in the Bundlesliga last season and he’s back in the league to contend for a starting shirt under new manager, Keith Andrews.

 

5. Taiwo Awoniyi

Awoniyi is a striker that gives his team presence in the box. He’s strong on the ball and can easily bully defenders and aim at goal. Injuries have dealt with him over the last couple of months but Nottingham Forest retained him for the new season – a testament to his abilities when fit. With Nottingham Forest competing in Europe this season, Awoniyi is expected to get adequate game time under Nuno Espirito Santo.
