Tunisia Turn to Hervé Renard After Lamouchi Exit Following World Cup Humbling

Tunisia have appointed French tactician Hervé Renard as their new head coach following the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi just one match into the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Tunisian Football Federation acted swiftly after the Carthage Eagles suffered a crushing 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening Group F fixture on Monday.

Lamouchi’s departure was confirmed only hours after the heavy loss, with federation officials moving quickly to secure the services of the vastly experienced Renard as they attempt to revive Tunisia’s World Cup campaign.

Renard is expected to arrive in Mexico on Tuesday and will immediately oversee the team’s training session ahead of their next group-stage encounter.

The 57-year-old brings a wealth of international experience to the role. He recently completed a second spell in charge of the Saudi Arabia national team before leaving the position in April.

Renard is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished coaches in international football. He guided Morocco to the 2018 FIFA World Cup and later led Saudi Arabia at the 2022 tournament, where they produced one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history by defeating eventual champions Argentina in the group stage.

His résumé also includes a stint with the France women’s national team at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, as well as Africa Cup of Nations triumphs with Zambia in 2012 and Ivory Coast in 2015.

Tunisia will now hope Renard’s proven track record on the international stage can inspire a turnaround as they seek to keep their World Cup hopes alive after a disastrous start to the tournament.
