Umar Sadiq: Real Sociedad’s Nigerian striker rising through resilience

Umar Sadiq Mesbah, born on February 2, 1997, in Kaduna, Nigeria, is one of La Liga’s most underrated strikers.

Standing at 1.92 meters with the strength of a classic target man and the flair of a modern centre forward, Sadiq combines physicality, agility and intelligence in front of goal.

Early Life and Path to Europe

Sadiq’s football journey began in the bustling football communities of Kaduna before honing his talent across academies such as Kuso Boys, Future of Africa and Football College Abuja.

His breakout moment came in 2013 during a youth tournament in Croatia where he finished as top scorer, attracting European scouts. A move to Spezia in Italy followed, and soon after he landed at AS Roma. Still a teenager, he scored twice in just six Serie A appearances, immediately showcasing his promise at the highest level.

A Journey of Loans and Learning

Although Roma recognized his talent, first-team competition was fierce. Sadiq went on a series of loan spells across Europe with stints at Bologna, Torino, NAC Breda, Rangers and Perugia.

While these moves may have seemed unstable from the outside, they shaped his resilience. It was at Partizan Belgrade in Serbia that he finally found rhythm, scoring regularly and developing into a complete forward who could dominate defenders rather than just threaten them.

Breakthrough at Almería

His defining breakthrough came when he signed for Almería in Spain. Over two seasons, he became one of the most prolific strikers in the Segunda División, guiding the club to promotion contention with relentless consistency.

His goal-scoring form caught the attention of Real Sociedad, who made him their marquee signing in September 2022. He repaid their faith instantly by scoring on his La Liga debut against Atlético Madrid.

Injury Setback and Return

Just as momentum was building, Sadiq suffered a devastating ACL injury in a match against Getafe. The setback kept him out for months during what was meant to be his breakout season in La Liga.

However, his determination saw him return fitter and hungrier. He reappeared in the 2023–24 season across La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League fixtures, gradually regaining his sharpness.

To ensure more consistent minutes, Real Sociedad sent him on loan to Valencia in 2025, where he slowly rebuilt his form and confidence. He recently returned to Real Sociedad training after the completion of his loan spell.

International Career with Nigeria

Sadiq became a household name in Nigeria after starring for the Olympic team at the 2016 Rio Games, where he scored four goals and helped the Super Eagles win bronze. His senior national team debut came in 2021, and he opened his account at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2022.

Stats and Current Form

At Real Sociedad, Sadiq has registered four goals in roughly thirty-five La Liga appearances, which may not reflect his full capabilities considering his long injury layoff.

His loan spell at Valencia has shown signs of revival, with five goals in sixteen matches proving that his instincts in front of goal are returning. Internationally, he has scored once in his first dozen senior appearances, and remains a strong candidate for future call-ups if he maintains fitness and form.

Future Outlook

At 28, Umar Sadiq is entering the prime of his career. His immediate goals revolve around staying healthy, cementing himself as a regular starter in La Liga and reclaiming his place in the Nigerian national team setup.

If he earns renewed faith from Real Sociedad, he could still evolve into one of Africa’s most impactful forwards in European football.
