Valverde Hat-Trick Stuns City as Giants Clash in Champions League Openers

The UEFA Champions League Round of 16 delivered a night of high-stakes drama on Wednesday as Federico Valverde’s sensational first-half hat-trick led Real Madrid to a dominant 3-0 victory over Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabéu.

While the Spanish giants took a commanding step toward the quarter-finals, other fixtures across the continent saw Paris Saint-Germain overpower Chelsea and Bodø/Glimt continue their underdog story with a clinical win over Sporting CP.

Here are three key takeaways from Wednesday’s action:

1. Federico Valverde is Real Madrid’s Big-Game Catalyst

In a match billed as a tactical chess match between Alvaro Arbeloa and Pep Guardiola, it was individual brilliance that broke the game open.

Federico Valverde effectively ended the contest before the halftime whistle, netting goals in the 20th, 27th, and 42nd minutes. His performance marked only the fourth time in history that Real Madrid have scored three goals in the first half of a Champions League knockout match. Despite Vinícius Júnior missing a second-half penalty, Madrid’s defensive solidity ensured Manchester City suffered their heaviest defeat of the season.

2. PSG’s Firepower Remains Unmatched

Paris Saint-Germain asserted their dominance at the Parc des Princes with a 5-2 victory over Chelsea. The French champions took sweet revenge for their previous Club World Cup exit, highlighted by a spectacular “golazo” from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia that effectively killed Chelsea’s momentum.

3. The Bodø/Glimt Fairytale Has Teeth

Champions League results

The Norwegian champions proved that their group stage form was no fluke, dispatching Sporting CP 3-0 at the Aspmyra Stadion.

By securing their fifth consecutive win in the competition, Bodø/Glimt have positioned themselves as a genuine threat to Europe’s established elite. Their clinical efficiency in Arctic conditions has left the Portuguese side with a massive mountain to climb in the return leg.

Elsewhere, Bayer Leverkusen and Arsenal played out a tense 1-1 draw at the BayArena, leaving their tie perfectly balanced heading back to London.
