Why Stanley Nwabali lost his Super Eagles spot – Troost-Ekong

Former Super Eagles captain has shared his thoughts on Stanley Nwabali with as the former Enyimba and Katsina United goalkeeper remains without a club.

Troost-Ekong Eling believes that Nwabali miscalculated as it would have been better to remain at his former club instead of terminating his contract.

Stanley Nwabali ended his contract with Chippa United after the Africa Cup of Nations in February as he hoped to get a deal abroad.

Nwabali hasn’t features for the Super Eagles since February and has practically lost his spot to Maduka Okoye who missed out on the AFCON due to personal reasons repeatedly.

However, Nwabali hasn’t been able to secure a move but has been seen training and playing football with friends in the office during the season.

In a recent chat, William Troost-Ekong said Nwabali’s situation could be due to him terminating his contract when the transfer window was shut.

Nevertheless, Troost-Ekong said he’s hopeful Nwabali will secure a move this summer.

Obviously I can’t speak for Stanley, but based on how things have unfolded now, maybe it would’ve been a better decision to remain with Chippa,”

“I think probably the situation hasn’t been favourable for him because I think the time he terminated his contract with the club was outside the transfer window, which made it very difficult for him to find a new club,”

“So, it’s been tough. I’ve spoken to Stanley a lot as well. I know he’s been training, keeping fit. Hopefully there’s going to be a good opportunity that comes his way now in the summer.”

Stanley Nwabali was in goal for the Super Eagles at the 2023 and 2025 Africa Cup of Nations as Nigeria finished second and third respectively.

Nwabali came into limelight at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote D’Ivoire and helped the Super Eagles reaches the final keeping four clean sheets.
