Nigeria’s DTigress secured their win at the ongoing Women’s Afrobasket Championship in Cote D’Ivoire.
After a comfortable 47-point win over Rwanda in their opening match on Saturday, the reigning champions were made to work hard for their victory.
Mozambique gave Rena Wakama’s ladies a good test in the second group match as the DTigress managed a five-point victory.
The Mozambiqicans put up impressive defensive showing on the first quarter as they reduced the DTigress to just nine points.
DTigress struggled to make with turnovers and shot selection as they made just 14% from their shooting.
The second quarter was even, even through the DTigress still struggled with shooting the ball from mid-range and beyond the arc.
Nigeria took the lead for the first in the game at the end of the third quarter with no point made from the three-point line but 100% from the free throw line.
Mozambique contested keenly in the last quarter as they narrowed the point deficit to five. However, Nigeria held on to 60-55 win to qualify for the knockout stage.
Ezinne Kalu led the team in points with 16 and four assists, Promise Amukamara scored 13 points while Murjanatu Musa continued her impressive start to the tournament with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The victory extends the DTigresses unbeaten run in the Women’s Afrobasket to 25 matches which dates back to 2015.
