World Cup dream drifts away as Super Eagles hold South Africa in Blomfontein

Nigeria’s dream of playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States of America is slowly drifting away after the team failed to secure a win over South Africa.

The Super Eagles came into the tie needing a win to revive their World Cup chase having won against Rwanda on Saturday.

Unfortunately, William Troost-Ekong’s unfortunate own-goal put Eric Chelle’s men under further pressure in the 25th minute.

The Super Eagles captain turned the ball into his net in an attempt to stop Mohau Nkota’s square ball into the box.

However, Calvin Bassey’s fortunate equalizer restored parity for the Super Eagles as the ball came off his head, then his arm before landing in the back of the net.

The second half saw the introduction of Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Tolu Arokodare, Samuel Chukwueze to help the team in attack.

However, the Bafana Bafana should strong in defense as the match ended 1-1 as the Super Eagles chances of qualifying for the World Cup further shrinks.

The draw takes Nigeria second on the group with 11 points after eight matches while South Africa are top with 17 points pending FIFA’s decision on the team fielding an ineligible player against Lesotho in March.
