5 bold predictions for the 2025–26 NBA season

As the new NBA season tips off, anticipation is at an all-time high. From rising superstars to shifting power dynamics, the 2025–26 campaign promises to deliver drama, surprises, and unforgettable moments.

Here are five predictions that could shape the storylines of the year ahead.

1. Oklahoma City Thunder primed for a repeat run.

The defending champions enter the new season as early favourites to retain their crown. With Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, and Jalen Williams leading a young yet seasoned core, Oklahoma City’s chemistry and depth stand out across the league.

Their 62.5 projected win total — the highest in the NBA — underscores the belief that the Thunder aren’t a one-season wonder. Barring major injuries or fatigue, they could become the league’s next dynasty in the making.

2. Luka Dončić will capture his first MVP award

After years of near misses, Luka Dončić is finally poised to win the NBA’s top individual honour. The Lakers star has refined his conditioning, improved his leadership, and looks determined to translate brilliance into sustained team success.

With LeBron James in the twilight of his career and other contenders battling inconsistency, the stage is set for Dončić to take over. Expect a statistical masterpiece — and perhaps a deep playoff run — from one of basketball’s generational talents.

3. Golden State Warriors stay competitive, but fall short of greatness

The Warriors still boast championship experience and elite shooting, but time may no longer be on their side. Stephen Curry remains a threat from anywhere on the court, yet age, health, and defensive concerns could limit Golden State’s ceiling.

They should comfortably make the playoffs and possibly win a series, but unless a young player steps up or a major trade materialises, another title run feels just out of reach.

4. A power shift looms in the Eastern Conference

The East could be in for a shake-up. With several contenders battling injuries and roster changes, teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers and Indiana Pacers are poised to rise. Cleveland’s young core — led by Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley — has the depth and defensive balance to make a genuine Finals push.

Meanwhile, traditional heavyweights such as Boston or Milwaukee may find it harder to maintain dominance amid tighter competition and fresher opponents.

5. The NBA’s global influence will reach new heights

This season could further cement basketball as a global sport. With international stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Victor Wembanyama, and Nikola Jokić already defining the league, expect another breakout from overseas — possibly a new All-Star from Europe or Africa.

Beyond the court, the NBA’s international games and grassroots initiatives are expanding rapidly, signalling a future where global fanbases play a larger role in shaping the sport’s identity.
