5 players who should switch allegiance to Super Eagles

Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, has a rich history bolstered by both homegrown talents and players of Nigerian descent who have chosen to represent the nation.

As the team looks to strengthen its squad, several players eligible to play for Nigeria could be valuable additions. Here are five players who should consider switching their international allegiance to the Super Eagles:

1. Tosin Adarabioyo (Chelsea/England)

A central defender known for his composure and defensive acumen, Tosin Adarabioyo recently signed with Chelsea from Fulham.

Despite representing England at various youth levels, he remains uncapped at the senior level and is eligible to play for Nigeria through his heritage.

The Nigerian Football Federation has shown interest in securing his commitment, and his addition could solidify the Super Eagles’ defense.

2. Carney Chukwuemeka (Chelsea/Dortmund, England)

A talented midfielder currently playing for Borussia Dortmund on loan from Chelsea,  Carney Chukwuemeka has represented England at youth levels but remains eligible for Nigeria through his Nigerian parents.

Known for his dribbling ability, strength, and vision, Chukwuemeka could bring creativity and energy to Nigeria’s midfield, an area that could use more depth and dynamism.

3. Lesley Ugochukwu (Chelsea, France)

Another Chelsea midfielder, Lesley Ugochukwu has played for France at youth levels but is of Nigerian descent.

The physically imposing defensive midfielder has the ability to dominate the center of the pitch with his tackling and passing range.

Given Nigeria’s need for a strong defensive presence in midfield, Ugochukwu, currently on loan at Southampton, would be a valuable addition to the squad.

4. Ethan Nwaneri (Arsenal, England)

Ethan Nwaneri, Arsenal’s record-breaking midfielder, became the youngest player to debut in the Premier League at 15. Born to Nigerian parents, he is eligible to play for England and Nigeria. While England has already capped him at youth levels, a senior call-up remains open. His technical ability and potential make him an exciting prospect for Nigeria’s midfield.

5. Chuba Akpom (Lille, England)

Chuba Akpom, currently playing for Lille, has had an impressive career resurgence. The former Arsenal striker was a key figure at Middlesbrough, where he won the EFL Championship Player of the Season (2022/23).

Despite representing England at youth levels, he remains eligible to play for Nigeria at the senior level. His goal-scoring ability could provide Nigeria with a reliable striking option.
