Manchester United defeated Leicester City 5-2 in Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s first game in charge as interim boss, as the Red Devils advanced to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.
The hosts responded in style to the departure of manager Erik ten Hag with a clinical victory over Leicester City to make the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.
Under the interim management of Ten Hag’s assistant, former United golden boy Ruud van Nistelrooy, The Reds came on strong, opening the scoring in the 15th minute.
What followed was a frantic first half, which saw six goals scored – including a brace by Casemiro – four of which came within the space of just 11 minutes.
Bruno Fernandes scored his second of the match in the 59th minute to kill the game, and despite Leicester looking to make things interesting with a late push, United did more than enough to secure their passage to the next round.
Elsewhere, Chelsea lost 2-0 to Newcastle to crash out of the competition as manager Enzo Maresca rang the changes. Alexander Isak opened the scoring and Newcastle never looked back from that point.
